Text on reverse: “O Say Can You See” The Star-Spangled Banner in Sports In game one of the 1918 World Series in Chicago, President Woodrow Wilson asked a military band to play “The Star-Spangled Banner” to honor the soldiers fighting overseas in World War I. While the crowd stood for the patriotic tune, a young Red Sox pitcher looked on from the mound – none other than Baltimore’s own “Babe” Ruth! It was the first time the song was officially played at a sporting event and there was so much enthusiasm it was repeated at each game of the series. The song became our national anthem in 1931, but it had already become an everlasting part of our sports heritage.
