Diary (1965-1966)

Brown five-year diary in a Cedar Box.

A lot of fun, funky teenage angst, including 1965 autographs from The Zombies: Chris White, Hugh Grundy, and Colin Blunstone (I took my diary to a concert? Apparently!). The opening group must have been The Executives because I also have two pieces of Trumpeter Gary King’s lilac scarf, at least I believe it was Gary King (my diary shows only “Gary”; also, according to a Facebook posting, Gary played bass guitar, not a brass instrument).

I cannot totally trust my younger self for accuracy, but while I don’t remember this encounter (I do remember the concert), I totally believe that we encountered The Zombies and The Executives in the hallway. My hometown is mid-sized, the auditorium of a modest size, but for some unfathomable reason, we, in the 1960’s, enjoyed frequent concerts by hot groups (probably on their way to larger and more lucrative venues).

 

However, in that same diary, I told the biggest whopper of my life: that a friend and I ran into The Beatles at the Playboy Club and got their autographs.

 

We did not.

 

It is true that my Auntie often took me to the Playboy club – she had a male friend who had a “key”; he would escort us there, and I would order a Shirley Temple; I felt so grown up. I loved watching the Bunnies serving drinks, how they navigated in those costumes without spilling their assets into the drinks. Spoiler: maintaining a straight back, they did a delicate little stoop, NEVER bending over.

 

Anyway, I forged the Beatles’ autographs on a Playboy Club Napkin and penned this charming piece of confabulation in my diary – keep in mind I was all of 14:

 

Friday, August 27, 1965.

[We] saw The Beatles at The Playboy Club. We got to talk to them & we got their autographs. I don’t think we’ll tell the other guys about the autographs because we don’t want them to feel bad, so we’ll probably just tell __ about seeing them in the Club. The way George looked when he signed the napkin. I just about sank through the floor. The rest of the Beatles were neat, too. But – I LOVE GEORGE – I LOVE GEORGE – I LOVE GEORGE – I LOVE GEORGE!

Forged Beatles Autograph; Not too bad for a 14-year-old forger (practice run on my diary case)

A cute story, but a quick Google search debunks any hint of an August 1965 Playboy Club visit by The Beatles.

Absolute truth: we did see The Beatles in concert on August 29, 1965, at the Hollywood Bowl, but the teenybopper screams pretty much drowned out the music. But, nonetheless, we were thrilled to be there.

 

And, yes, The Beatles Bible is correct: a fan gave birth to a baby boy in the parking lot, this momentous event announced over the loudspeaker.

 

No HIPPA back then.
