A giant green Ferrian grossular garnet.
6.72 pounds3,048.141 grams15,241 carats
Other than the crusty spessartite coating, this appears to be 100% green
grossular garnet.
From what I can gather from my research, this is a fairly unusual size
for a garnet. This material was first discovered in 1994, and, of this posting, the Kayes Region in Mali is the only part of the world where this this type of garnet can be found. (See Gems & Gemology, Fall 1995, Volume XXXI.)
The famous Subway
Garnet weighs almost 10 pounds.
While the more famous garnet is larger and its shape more defined than this
specimen, the Subway garnet is totally opaque; mine is very sparkly, and shows
evidence of transparency.
