Note (from insert):
Rising from humble beginnings,
Benjamin became America’s world-class citizen.
Retiring from his printing business
at 42, he devoted his remaining 42 years to civic improvements, scientific
investigations, statesmanship and international diplomacy.
In Philadelphia, Franklin improved
living conditions by helping to establish the first hospital, the first
circulating library, a fire insurance company, a volunteer fire company, and an
adult self-improvement club. He designed improved street lamps, fireplace
stoves, and lightning rods. He even invented a musical instrument, the “glass
armonica.”
Franklin signed the key documents
of the American Revolution. He helped write the Declaration of Independence,
and his sage advice enabled his fellow delegates to the Constitutional
Convention work out their differences to produce the lasting framework of
American government.
In England, he represented the
interests of the colonies, and then he successfully secured crucial French aid
in the American War for Independence.
His electricity investigations
earned him election into illustrious scientific and philosophic societies as
well as honorary degrees from renowned universities. Thereafter, he was called
Doctor Franklin. This was for someone who had had only a second grade
education!
